Dragonflies - The Black Darter

First seen on Monday 20th September 2021 at Cragside

Darters are the smallest of the dragonfly families, and the Black Darter is the smallest of these. They are active in the late summer. Males are obvious to identify, being pretty much all black, with just hints of yellow here and there, which darken with age. However, the females (and juveniles) are quite different, being bright yellow, with contrasting patches of black. They are normally found on lakes, ponds, and bogs. These were found on Slipper Lake (the Tarn).
