Dragonflies - The Southern Hawker

First seen on Monday 20th September 2021 at Cragside

The Southern Hawker, as the name suggests, is much more common in the south of the country, but it is spreading northwards. The male is bright blue, green and brown, but the female (shown here) is green and brown, with large patches of green on the side of the thorax. This one was busy laying eggs under the grassy back of Slipper lake (the Tarn). The males are very territorial, and are usually found flying up and down keeping others away.
