Ants - The Black Garden Ant

First seen on Saturday 14th April 2018 at Croome

Black Garden Ants are actually dark brown. They are the most common ant in the UK and can be found just about anywhere. They usually nest under paths or large stones. They around 5mm in length, about half the size of a wood ant (which I've yet to see at Croome).

Although its often called 'flying ant day' the time when ants fly can last for many days. it's when they grow wings to fly out and start new colonies. Usually in late spring early summer, it can occur any time and is not the same time for all ants. these were found at Croome near the end of May.
