Warblers, Crests and Flycatchers - The Blackcap

First seen on Tuesday 12th April 2016 at Croome

The Blackcap is another bird that can in theory be seen all year round but you are much less likely to see one in the winter. The majority of blackcaps migrate to us in the spring and they perch in the trees and sing their heart out. If you spot one, they are unmistakable, as they live up to their name and have a very black cap on their heads (unless they are a female, when it is hazel coloured). They are most often found in trees around the lake, and in the woods to the south of the estate.

The photo below shows a juvenile blackcap, not long fledged, in the woods to the south of the estate. She is a female - you can see her hazel coloured cap.
