Birds of Prey - The Buzzard

First seen on Thursday 18th February 2016 at Croome

Most of the time you see a buzzard it will be soaring in the sky, often too high up to make out much detail. You will also be able to hear its cry from a great distance. Sometimes, when they have just taken off and still gaining height, you will get a good view such as this one in flight, seen from the path to the Rotunda, just past the bird hide.

The buzzard below, was in the gardens by the main house - it had just finished eating a meal! I've only seen a few rodents at Croome, but they have all been caught by Buzzards or Kestrels (and wouldn't make a good photo...)

They will often perch at the top of tree, such as a large isolated oak tree. They may stay there for long periods of time. Occasionally you may come across one perching in a closer smaller tree, and you will get a better view. This one was spotted in a tree on the path to the Rotunda, beside the walled garden.

Croome rarely gets birds of prey other than Buzzards or Kestrels, but one way to recognise a buzzard is the white crescent on its chest, clearly shown in the photo below...
