Named after the Catholic Cardinal's robe, Cardinal Beetles are bright red in colour. These beetles are quite common, and can be found in the meadows and bushes. These were photographed at the very far south end of the estate.

Note that there are two species of cardinal beetle. The one below has a black head (pyrochroa coccinea). Both forms have comb-like antennae.

The second form (pyrochroa serraticornis) has a red head as in the one shown below. The red headed form is the most common one to see. However, there is a third species which can be mistaken for the cardinal beetle called the Lily Beetle (it certainly fooled me)
