Thrushes and Chats - The Fieldfare

First seen on Wednesday 9th December 2015 at Croome

The Fieldfare is a winter visitor to Croome. It can be found all over the parkland, often at the tops of tall trees but also on smaller trees and on the ground. They feed on fruit, so can be found in berry trees and in orchards, feeding on fallen apples. They tend to fly in small flocks and can be heard chattering as they fly around (chak-chak-chak). The photograph below was actually taken in the main car park (before it was resurfaced) where some fallen fruit still remained.

In the late winter months Fieldfare can be seen in huge numbers in the meadows feeding on grubs and worms and flying up to the trees. There can sometimes be literally hundreds of them, as shown in the final two photos (which are just part of the scene).
