The Gold Spot moth is in the same family of the much less colourful Silver Y moth, They are both Noctuidae which are medium sized, stout bodied moths which fly at night but also sometimes in the daytime (as this one was). The Gold Spot moth has a beautiful red/brown pattern similar to a spider web, with bright golden patches. It looks bright orange when it is flying, so it is quite easy to spot.
They favour damp places such as water meadows and river banks, which is exactly where I found this one - just down-river from the Chinese Bridge.
