Finches and Buntings - The Goldfinch

First seen on Thursday 10th March 2016 at Croome

The Goldfinch is commonly found at the feeders and is particularly fond of the niger seeds. They can however, also be seen feeding on seeds at the top of the trees around the estate (especially the alder trees).

They fly from tree to tree in flocks, with a 'bouncy' flight. They usually sing with soft, bubbly, tinkling trills. However, when they are feeding they can get quite possessive and argue with harsh rasping noises.

In the late summer, flocks of Goldfinches feed on the fluffy seed heads of the thistles along the river. Walking along you can surprise them (and you) when they fly up, seemingly from nowhere.
