Beetles - The Blackclock Beetle

First seen on Saturday 5th August 2017 at Croome

Once very common, I don't seem to see many of these any more, numbers of beetles do seem to be declining. This one is the classic shiny black 'ground beetle', which scuttles along the ground at great speed (making a photo somewhat difficult!). There are hundreds of different species of ground beetle, all with long Latin names. This one is Pterostichus madidus. It can have black legs or brown legs (as in the other photo). It is also known as the Strawberry Ground Beetle, due to its fondness for fruit.
