Bees - The Hairy Footed-flower Bee

First seen on Tuesday 21st March 2017 at Croome

These bees are out quite early in the year (these were seen in March). The male and female are very different. The female (shown below) has all-over dark fur except a brown patch on the leg. They are solitary bees, and nest in holes in mud banks and clay slopes - in fact there were several females investigating the holes in the grotto walls, possibly to see if they would make suitable nests.


 

The male (shown below) is 'normal' bee colouration, apart from having a very pale face.
