Gulls - The Herring Gull

First seen on Saturday 13th May 2017 at Croome

The Herring Gull, along with the Lesser Black-backed Gull and the Black-headed Gull are the three main gulls that most people will see in the UK, especially in inland. The Herring Gull is a similar size to the Lesser Black-backed Gull, the main differences being much paler wings and pink legs in the herring gull rather than yellow legs in the lesser black-backed gull. If you get close enough to see, Herring Gulls also have pale eyes. Juveniles are brown and speckled and much more difficult to identify! The call of the Herring Gull is the one you will most associate with the seaside.

The group in the photo below (and the one above) were gathered in the ploughed fields behind the Shrubbery. You can see some of them are more brown and speckled - these are juveniles. The call of the Herring Gull is the one you will most associate with the seaside.
