Swallow, Swift and Martins - The House Martin

First seen on Sunday 8th May 2016 at Croome

The House Martin is one of the birds at Croome you can't fail to see. In the summer, huge numbers build nests below the roof on the main house. They fly very low (just inches) over the lawns and meadows to catch insects and then fly up to the nests to feed their young. They can sometimes be seen clinging onto the walls of the house, as shown on the below.

At the end of the summer, when all the young are getting ready to migrate, vast numbers can be seen buzzing around the house like bees...

One beautiful sight to see in the summer is the Martins skimming low over the river, creating splashes and ripples in the water...

You can see here that the House Martins fly over the water with their beak wide open - this one may get a mouthful of weeds!
