Butterflies - The Large White

First seen on Monday 22nd August 2016 at Croome

The Large White butterfly is very similar to the small white. Although it is larger, unless you see the two together, the difference isn't always obvious. Both are found on larger flowers, hedgerows, thistles etc. The Large White does however have much bolder makings than the small white. The black on the wingtips covers a larger area than the Small White, and it is much more cleanly defined. The male Large White (shown below) has a black spot on the under-wing, but not on the top of the wing.

The female (shown below) does have a spot. Large White butterflies are found just about anywhere at Croome, often in the formal flowerbeds, or in the hedgerows.
