Probably the most common butterfly you will see in the meadows, you can see them on a warm sunny day flying around in huge numbers. Coloured brown as their name suggests, they are one of the larger butterflies, and you should have no problem seeing them. They love the purple flowers on the thistles along the river.
Unusually, the male (photo below) is much more drab than the female in colouration, more of an all over brown. There is just a tiny bit of orange around the wing spot.
