Grasshoppers - The Meadow Grasshopper

First seen on Saturday 30th July 2016 at Croome

As its name suggests, they are found in the grassy meadows. Not easy to spot unless they hop. When you so see them they are very colourful - look at those golden eyes. Meadow grasshoppers have relatively short wings, whereas common grasshopper's wings extend beyond the abdomen. People with better hearing than me will of course be able to hear them - they have short bursts of 'sewing machine' like chirps. They are generally green, and the lines on their shoulders are straight, and not differently coloured.

The little fellow below is a baby meadow grasshopper, or 'nymph' about a month younger than the adults. Nymphs are very small, but not too dissimilar to the adults. Adults are approx 1-2cm, females have short wings. Adults are normally green, but brown ones can occur.
