Thrushes and Chats - The Nightingale

First seen on Saturday 22nd April 2017 at Croome

The nightingale is another of those 'iconic' birds that are rarely seen or even heard. We are very fortunate to have a number of nightingales at Croome, in the woods in the south edge of the estate. Walking through the woods, or on the paths in the nearby meadows, you may hear the nightingale's song. It is not as melodic as some people imagine, but rather a fantastic, series of vibrant sounds, with sudden changes. I think the sounds are almost electronic, and wouldn't sound out of place on an episode of Doctor Who. By contrast the bird is quite plain in appearance and not the easiest of birds to spot. However, once in a lifetime when fortune favours you, one may just pose for the camera...

I recorded this video in the woods at Croome in the spring of 2017.

Nightingales have a habit of raising their tail. This one did that a lot, the tail is a reddy-brown colour.
