Butterflies - The Painted Lady

First seen on Monday 19th June 2017 at Croome

The Painted Lady is one of our larger butterflies, with a wingspan of over two inches. Interestingly, it is a migrant, and arrives in the summer having travelled from North Africa. Numbers vary from year to year, the best year recently being 2009. It is beautifully coloured, in orange black and white although this one didn't open its wings for a photo! The under-wings are however quite spectacular as well. This one was found in the north meadow. My only signing in 2017 sadly, so this was not a good year for them.
