Finches and Buntings - The Reed Bunting

First seen on Sunday 3rd April 2016 at Croome

These birds superficially appear very similar to sparrows. However, the male has a striking black head with white moustache. The female (shown below) like the sparrow, is quite different from the male, being much paler, but with lovely brown markings.

Reed Buntings can be found close by the river. A good place to see them is along the river walk, about half-way between the Chinese Bridge and the Coach Splash. They often perch on branches and twigs, in plain view. Like their name suggests, they can spend a lot of time in the reeds, where they will be less visible moving in and out of the foliage.
