Beetles - The Rove Beetle

First seen on Saturday 14th April 2018 at Croome

Rove Beetles are another large family of beetles (around 1,000 species). Many are very tiny, but some, such as the more famous Devil's Coach Horse can be quite large - several centimetres in length. They generally have short wing cases (elytra) and many are black and red.

The one below is Paederus Littoralis which is flightless, and has metallic blue/green elytra. it lives among rotting debris, such as this old piece of wood.

This is one of the larger Rove Beetles, called Ocypus brunnipes (no common name) found amonst dead wood. This one is a smaller version of the Devil's Coach Horse, but has brown legs rather than black.
