Wasps - The Ruby-tailed Wasp

First seen on Monday 29th April 2019 at Croome

The Ruby-tailed Wasp, is in a family of wasps called a Jewelled Wasps - clearly having a very apt name. They are also called Cuckoo Wasps as they lay their eggs in the nests of other insects. In this case, this wasp was investigating the small nest holes in the Grotto. This is where you can often see the Hairy-footed Flower Bee, which is a solitary black mining bee.

The Ruby-tailed Wasp is quite small, just 1cm long, but is very easy to see, as the metallic colours reflect the sunlight and it almost glows with blue/green and ruby colours.
