Flies - The Solomon's Seal Sawfly

First seen on Friday 10th May 2019 at Croome

As the name suggests these sawflies, or rather their larvae feed on the Solomon's Seal plant and can be devastating, completely defoliating them. Fortunately the plants can survive and grow again in the following year. Sawflies are so called because they cut into the leaves to lay their eggs. I first saw the larvae (caterpillars) the previous June, so its nice to see both forms on the same plant. These photos were taken in May, and yes, the plants looked as good as new - but in a months time in June, maybe not!
