Waders - The Common Sandpiper

First seen on Sunday 23rd April 2017 at Croome

The common sandpiper is a wader, found on the edges of lakes and rivers, in shallow water. It is not a bird you would normally expect to see at Croome, but there are a few suitable areas along the river with a shallow sloping shoreline. There are many different sandpipers, but the common sandpiper can usually be identified by its 'bobbing' movement as it works its way along the shoreline. It is a very timid bird, easily disturbed, so if you do see one, it won't stay long, passers by and dogs will unfortunately scare it off very easily.
