Beetles - The Soldier Beetle

First seen on Saturday 13th May 2017 at Croome

Soldier Beetles are so called because their bright colours are reminiscent of old military uniforms. They hunt other smaller insects and can be found on the edges of woodlands and hedgerows, often in the grass.

In the photo below the beetle is about to fly. It has raised its wing cases (elytra) and the wings are unfolding.
