Dragonflies - The Southern Hawker

First seen on Saturday 6th August 2016 at Croome

This dragonfly is similar to the Migrant Hawker, but has vivid blue and green markings rather than blue and brown. The Emperor also has similar colours, it has a green body and blue tail, whereas this Southern Hawker is a mixture of blue and green all over. Southern Hawkers are around from July to September, and are mainly seen in flight (although they do occasionally land on vegetation such as a small branch, and dangle down vertically.


 

The female is similar to the male, but more of an overall green pattern. The one below is probably a male, despite appearing more green.


 

You can see in the photo below, that despite its bright colours the Southern hawker seems to vanish when it rests in a tree...
