Warblers, Crests and Flycatchers - The Spotted Flycatcher

First seen on Friday 27th May 2016 at Croome

These birds are summer visitors. As their name suggests, they catch flies. They are not brightly coloured birds so at first glance not easy to identify, but their feeding habits are quite distinctive. They perch in a branch, fly out to catch an insect, then fly back to the same branch, repeating this many times - great fun to watch. They can normally be found in the summer months, around the main lake, raising their families.

2017 was a good year for them, with many young ones. I counted five flycatchers in just one tree. In 2018 the birds stayed hidden until late summer, then a family could be seen feeding around the lake for a few weeks.
