Thrushes and Chats - The Stonechat

First seen on Monday 31st October 2016 at Croome

The Stonechat can be seen in Croome all the year round, although they tend to move away during the breeding months in the summer. They are mostly in the meadows, often near the river. They are relatively easy to see, as they tend to perch at the top of small plants - the female in the second photo is showing a classic pose.

They will also perch at the top of small trees, or in the case of the male below - on a post. These were both alongside the path following the river, between the house and the main lake, but they can normally be seen all along the river.

Stonechats are so called because they make a chat-chat noise like two stones being hit together. Male and female are quite different, the male having a very dark head and more vibrant colours.
