Swallow, Swift and Martins - The Swallow

First seen on Tuesday 12th April 2016 at Croome

Swallows can be seen virtually anywhere on the Estate. You may well encounter them as soon as you arrive at Croome, as they can always be seen flying around the car park and reception area, often perching on the overhead wires. The one on the green cable had just arrived in the spring. This is the usual place I see my first swallow of the year. The other place where you will find them is in front of the house, with the House Martins. They can be seen flying over the grass, catching insects, and sometimes having a rest on a post or fence. There are other lawns and of course the meadows, where the swallows frequently chase the insects.

The one below is resting on the roof of the reception building, and below that, in a window - a very good place to get a good view of the swallows. When they are perched here, you can see their beautiful iridescent blue feathers. At the end of the summer, when the young have fledged, they sometimes gather on the wires in the car park - I have seen over a hundred here.
