Swallow, Swift and Martins - The Swift

First seen on Monday 8th May 2017 at Croome

Swifts are not common at Croome. I've seen three flying near the church, and five or more along the ridge walk (probably the best place to see them). Unlike the swallows and martins, swifts never perch, so you will only ever see them in flight. Swifts are easy to distinguish from swallows and martins. Firstly unlike swallows and martins they have no white underside, and are all-over dark brown. Secondly, they have long thin wings, which form their iconic 'scythe' shape when flying. Finally, whereas swallow and martins have various chattering noises when flying, swifts have a characteristic screeching sound.
