Caterpillars - The Viburnum Beetle

First seen on Monday 28th May 2018 at Croome

Unlike many caterpillars which are the larvae of moths or butterflies, this is the larvae of the Viburnum Beetle. As you can see in the photo, these are real pests as they defoliate the Viburnum shrubs. Most of the damage is done by the larvae, but the beetle itself also eats the leaves - they are not a very welcome visitor!
