Demoiselles prefer flowing streams and rivers, so the Derwent at Gibside is ideal. Beautiful Demoiselles like fast flowing rivers, this Banded Demoiselle prefers a slow flow. These Damselflies are quite a bit bigger than the other damselflies, and with the male's large dark spot on his wings they are easy to spot in flight. When settled you can see the fantastic metallic blue-green colour. As well as the wing spot, the male has a more blue colour, whereas the female (in the second photo) is green, with clear wings.
