Corvids - The Crow

First seen on Wednesday 23rd October 2019 at Gibside

This Crow's full name is Carrion Crow, although you are much less likely to see the other British crow, the Hooded Crow. Crows can be found all over the parkland, more often than not, perched in a tall tree making their characteristic crowing noise.

At first glance, corvids can look similar - but crows are bigger than jackdaws, and are all over black including the eyes (jackdaws have pale blue eyes). The crow's beak is quite broad, bigger than a jackdaw's, but smaller than the huge one the raven has. A rook can be identified by its pale, long, very sharp looking beak.
