Corvids - The Jay

First seen on Tuesday 1st March 2022 at Gibside

The Jay is the most colourful member of the corvid family. It is mostly pink in colour, but has a flash of vivid blue on its wings and a big black moustache. They are quite elusive shy birds, very difficult to see, as they hide well in trees, but can occasionally be found feeding on the ground. They are fond of acorns, so the oak trees in Gibside are a good place to look for them. The one below was in the Ice House Dene, the second one found on the path up to the stables from the river. They can often be heard before they are seen, as they make a harsh screech - often when other birds are arguing with them.
