There are three types of newt in the UK - the Great-crested Newt, the Smooth Newt (or Common Newt) and this one, the Palmate Newt. The Palmate Newt is the smallest, growing to around 80-90cm. This one is a male, and has well patterned body. The most distinguishing feature, which gives it its name is the webbed rear feet, which you can just see in the second photo.
