Mammals - The Roe Deer

First seen on Thursday 27th May 2021 at Gibside

Unlike some deer that live in herds, Roe Deer are more solitary, living in small groups, usually feeding on the edges of woods and on farmland. I've seen Roe Deer in several places at Gibside, and they could probably be found anywhere on the edges of woodland. This one was on the lawn, not far from the ruined hall. You can identify deer from the shape of the rump patch. Roe Deer have a broad white rump patch. Another way is their nose and mouth - they have black nose and mouth, with a contrasting white chin.

Roe deer are a beautiful rusty colour in the summer, and more dull-grey in the winter. This one is mostly in its winter colour, but he is moulting, and you can see the brighter rusty colour showing through.
