Beetles - The Rove Beetle

First seen on Thursday 27th May 2021 at Gibside

Rove Beetles are another large family of beetles (around 1,000 species). Many are very tiny, but some, such as the more famous Devil's Coach Horse can be quite large - several centimetres in length. They generally have short wing cases (elytra) and many are black and red.

This one is possibly Philonthus politus - black, with bronze tinted elytra. It was found in the walled garden.
