Butterflies - The Small Copper

First seen on Thursday 27th May 2021 at Gibside

Not as common as many butterflies, the Small Copper can be identified by its vivid orange colouration. It is quite small, similar in size to the blue butterflies. They can be seen mid to late summer, in the meadows, especially by the river.

Interestingly, the small copper has one drab underwing and one pretty one. Male and female are very similar, the male is smaller and has more pointed wings. Small Coppers do also have colour variations, including this one which has little blue spots on the lower wings.
