Waders - The Bar-tailed Godwit

First seen on Monday 18th November 2019 at Holy Island

Godwits are easy to identify, as they are the large waders with a very long straight bill (not curved down like a curlew). However, there are two types of Godwits, not so easy to tell apart. They are the black-tailed and bar-tailed Godwits. On Lindisfarne it is these Bar-tailed Godwits which you are more likely to see. Bar-tailed Godwits have (as their name suggests) a barred pattern to their tail feathers, although its not always easy to see under their confusingly black wingtips. The one here in-flight is kindly showing its tail. There are other more subtle differences such as a shorter leg above their knees. Godwits can usually be found at the Lough or along the shoreline, from the harbour to the castle. I've also seen them roosting on St Cuthbert's Island (as shown in the final wide photo).

Godwits feed by probing the sand and mud with their long bills. The one below looks to have caught a lugworm.
