Geese and Swans - The Barnacle Goose

First seen on Thursday 25th January 2024 at Holy Island

Barnacle Geese are with us for the winter months, usually arriving in October, and leaving in the spring to return to Greenland and Svalbard. They are smaller than most other Geese. They are very much black and white rather than the normal shades of brown of our other geese. Their call is more of a bark compared to the honking of the Canada Goose.

The three Barnacle Geese at the back, in the first photo are with Brent Geese (also small compared to Greylags and Canada Geese). These were on the causeway.
