Wasps - The Common Wasp

First seen on Tuesday 2nd November 2021 at Holy Island

Wasps all look very similar, and you're initially reluctant to get too close to see the differences! The best way of identifying them is their face. The Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) has quite a lot of yellow patches, but significantly has a black 'anchor' shape in the centre. Wasps are important pollinators and pest controllers as their young are fed on small insects.
