The Garden Tiger moth is one of our larger moths, but not very often seen. The caterpillar is more common - known as the "Woolly Bear" caterpillar. The bright red underwings are not always visible when the wings are folded, but it is still a spectacular moth. Sadly this one is not as spectacular as it could be, getting a bit tatty in its old age. This one was found in the meadows, not far from the castle garden.
