Butterflies - The Green-veined White

First seen on Wednesday 29th July 2020 at Holy Island

The Green-veined White Butterfly is one of several 'white' butterflies and are quite common in the meadows on the island. Although you can see veins in the wings, it is the underside pattern that gives this butterfly its name. If you look at the photograph you can see the green shaded veins underneath are actually black on very pale yellow. The female has more black markings than the male, and the second brood of the year also has more black again.

The photo below is a first brood Green-veined White. They are smaller and lack the spots and black markings that the second brood have. First brood will be the spring ones (April in this case), second brood more in the summer (July in the first photo).
