Birds of Prey - The Kestrel

First seen on Tuesday 21st January 2020 at Holy Island

Wherever you walk around the Lindisfarne, there is a good chance you will see a kestrel. They will normally be hovering in search of food, often some distance from the normal paths, in the middle of the fields. If you are lucky, one may be hovering close by. If you are even luckier, you may find one perched in a tree, or on a post, or in this case on a wall. Take great care not to disturb it and you may have a view of this lovely bird similar to the one below, looking for voles in the grass below the wall. This one is a female as she is an all-over brown in colour. Males have a grey head, and more vivid chestnut coloured wings. She was on a wall quite close to the picnic area in the Castle grounds.

This female (which could well be the same one) was hovering over a grassy area near the Priory. After several changes of position, she eventually found a vole in the long grass and swooped down.

She's caught it and is now 'mantling' - spreading her wings out to protect and hide her prey from being stolen by others.

She eventually flew off to find somewhere peaceful to eat her meal.
