Herons, Egrets, Cranes and Bitterns - The Little Egret

First seen on Tuesday 3rd December 2019 at Holy Island

Once very rare in the UK, the Little Egret is now relatively common and can be seen in good numbers in the south of the country. Despite the name, they are not a small bird - with a wingspan of around a metre. This one was found feeding along the channel west of the Rocket Field. They feed in shallow waters, sometimes finding their prey by stirring up the water with their feet. They roost and build their nests in trees.


 

This Little Egret was feeding in a pool next to the causeway. After both big splashes it caught small fish...
