Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Long-tailed Duck

First seen on Saturday 12th March 2022 at Holy Island

The Long-tailed Duck is a spectacular duck, with harlequin style plumage - patches of white black and brown. Unfortunately this one is a bit far out to see the colours properly. The male is the one with the very long tail giving it its name. It is a sea duck, but can sometimes be found inland.

This one was giving much better views, from the causeway, by the bridge. Sadly, it is in winter plumage, so nowhere near as spectacular as the spring plumage. In fact its difficult to tell exactly what this one is - probably a female/juvenile.
