Butterflies - The Meadow Brown

First seen on Wednesday 8th July 2020 at Holy Island

Probably the most common butterfly you will see in the meadows around the castle, you can see them on a warm sunny day flying around in large numbers. Coloured brown as their name suggests, they are one of the larger butterflies. They love the purple flowers on the thistles.

Unusually, the male (below) is much more drab than the female in colouration, more of an all over brown. There is just a tiny bit of orange around the wing spot. The female has a much larger splash of orange around the single (or double) spot on her wings.
