Waders - The Redshank

First seen on Monday 18th November 2019 at Holy Island

The Redshank is a fairly common wader in Northumberland. It is also one of the easier ones to identify from a distance, with its bright red/orange legs (shanks). Commonly found in the harbour bay, they also like wetlands - the one in the grassy photo was found not far from the castle, near the lime kilns.

Even in flight, there's no hiding those bright legs!

This is the classic sleeping pose for a wader. Head back, beak tucked under wings and standing on one leg. Sometimes it makes identification more difficult, but those orange legs are a bit of a give-away.
