Pipits are one of the most difficult families of birds to differentiate. There are four relatively common species in the UK - Rock, Meadow, Water and Tree Pipits. The Meadow Pipit is the most common and is the one you are most like to see in grassy areas. However, if you are on a rocky shore, like Lindisfarne has, then you could well see a Rock Pipit like this one, found next to the castle gates. Rock Pipits tend to have heavier markings and a longer, stronger looking beak. Four other species of pipits have also been recorded on Lindisfarne.
