Mammals - The Roe Deer

First seen on Saturday 25th September 2021 at Holy Island

Roe deer are this beautiful rusty colour in the summer, and more dull-grey in the winter (both colours are shown in the second photo, this stag is starting to change into his winter colours). Unlike some deer that live in herds, Roe Deer are more solitary, living in small groups, usually feeding on the edges of woods and on farmland. Roe Deer on Holy Island tend to be found the northern half, in the fields and dunes. You can identify deer from the shape of the rump patch. Roe Deer have a broad white rump patch. Another way is their nose and mouth - they have black nose and mouth, with a contrasting white chin.
