Thrushes and Chats - The Song Thrush

First seen on Monday 2nd March 2020 at Holy Island

The song thrush is our most common thrush and resident all the year round. You will frequently hear them singing their distinctive, repeating song, or see them rummaging around in dead leaves on the ground. They will hunt for worms on the lawns and eat berries on the trees. In the winter they can sometimes also be seen grazing the meadows with their cousins, the Redwing and Fieldfare (the winter thrushes). The other bird it can be confused with is the Mistle Thrush, which is bigger, paler, more upright, has more uneven spots. In the spring you can sometimes hear several Song Thrushes all singing in different trees in competition to see who's best. Although it's easy to hear them singing, its not always easy to spot them - they are frequently hidden by branches and twigs!
